S4 No 9095 Demonstrator, USA. 1934.
'Hidden Treasures'

S4 No 9095 was built in 1934 at the Sentinel Waggon Works, UK. As a demonstrator with LHD and auto-stoker, it also had  hydraulic brakes an tipping gear. Shipped over on S.S. Manchester Hero June 29th 1934 docking at Newport News in the state of Virginia USA. This was a promotional tour organised by Sentinel to promotes sales in the States. The promotional tour encompassed Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Massachusetts. Unfortunately a serious accident curtailed the trip and was returned to Sentinel. The parts (LHD steering, auto-stoker, etc) were used in S6 demonstrator No 9142 which was sold to the Pocahontas Coal Co of New York in 1935. This archive of photos was kindly donated by D.George.

An Engineering apprentice at Shrewsbury in 1958 /59 was given the job of throwing out reels of Sentinel cine film. The purloined short clip, (half frame negative) shows a solid tyred 6 wheeler DG carrying a 'world speed record' car.  The 'Sunbeam' had broken the world land speed record at 203.8 mph on 28th March 1927 at Daytona Beach, USA driven by Sir Henry Seagrave.
